iTunes could not backup the iPad(or iPhone) “Nameofdevice” because the backup session failed.

If you have received this error, then you are experiencing an issue with your iTunes application. You can try searching the web for a multitude of responses, but what I found is this….re-install iTunes from scratch. I found this great tutorial on how to accomplish this based on your operating system.

Another thing I did before this was reset my Sync Services folder using this tutorial:

Not sure if this contributed to the correction, but start with the first tutorial and then try your sync and back-up with your re-installed iTunes.

    FYI, It happened to me after I installed Xcode 4.
